Noakhali: Muslim man demands pranami money as extortion

Police have arrested a man in Noakhali’s Begamganj Upazila of Bangladesh for allegedly harassing a Brahmin belonging to the minority Hindu community, including demanding extortion money from him. The arrested Kazi Nayan (52) is the son of deceased Kazi Tofail Ahmad of Kadirpur village, Ward No. 5 of Kadirpur Union No. 16 of Upazila.

Begumganj Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Jahedul Haque Rony confirmed the matter on Saturday, January 21, at around 7 p.m. He said that the arrested accused was handed over to the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Friday afternoon.

Earlier, the main accused in the case was arrested by the police from Kadirpur village, Ward number 5 of Kadirpur Union of the upazila, on the basis of a verbal complaint at around 2 p.m. on Thursday. According to the police, last Friday, January 20, the victim, Gopal Chakraborty (67), filed a case accusing four people of attempted murder, extortion, arson, theft, and intimidation.

According to the sources in the case and the victim, last Monday, January 10, the incident started at Rajni Doctor’s house in Kadirpur Union of Upazila. The victim, Gopal Chakraborty, is a Brahmin from the local Hindu community. He is the son of deceased Ganesh Chakraborty of Dakshin Thakur Bari, Rafikpur Village, Ward No. 6, Rasulpur Union.

Earlier, Anil Chandra Das of the Rajni doctor family of Kadirpur village in the Kadipur union of upazila and freedom fighter Naresh Chandra Das of the same family passed away. In this, Gopal Chakraborty completed the funeral work of two deceased. After that, the family of the deceased has given some pranami. After knowing about the pranami’s matter, the accused Kazi Nayan demanded half of pranami’s contribution of 10 thousand takas from the victim Brahmin at around 3:30 pm on January 10 and threatened to kill him and snatch the pranami money by force.

When the matter was reported to the local public representatives, the accused came to the scene and tried to strangle the witnesses and beat them severely. Later, the accused set fire to the hay stack and stole the tubewell and other goods from the house of the victim Brahmin. If any case is filed with the police station, the accused Kazi Nayan threatened to kill the Brahmin and evict the witnesses from the house. The OC also said that the police are trying to arrest the other accused in the case.
